Bolling, Captian Samuel - On Sunday night, the 16th day of December, 1798 after a tedious illness, departed this life in the 33d year of his age, Capt. Samuel Bolling of Fairfax County. Without the advantage of a liberal education, his plain unlettered sense procured him universal respect, and the many virtues, and excellent qualities of his heart, the friendship and esteem of all who knew him. In this truly amiable and worthy man, his numerous family will long have to lament the loss of an affectionate and kind protection; his neighbors, a faithful friend; the poor a generous benefactor; society a most valuable member, and the world an honest man. "Worth makes the MAN, and want of it the FELLOW; The rest is all but leather or prunella" "A Wit's a feather, and a Chief's a rod, an honest man is the noblest work of God" Alexandria Times (VA) December 20, 1798

Bolling, Thadeus Y. - In Gainesville, on the 10th inst. Thadeus Y. Bolling, of Lunenburg County, Virginia, about 21 years of age. While the deceased was comparatively a stranger in our community, he had so deported himself as to win the esteem of all who knew him; and it will be gratifying to his relatives and friends, to know that he received in his last illness every attention and kindness that esteem could prompt or humanity perform. It is sad to see the old and infirm die, but it is infinitely more sad and appalling to see the young suddenly cut off in the vigor of youth, and at a time when life is so full of hope and promise. Mr. Bolling was correct and straightforward in his dealings, generous in his impulses, self-reliant in his character, kind and amiable in his disposition. In the sudden death of one so young and full of vigor, we have another proof of the feeble hold we have upon life, and a forcible exhortation to so order our lives that we may be ready for death whenever it comes. Richmond Whig (VA) January 13, 1860

Bolling, Thomas - At Gaymont, the residence of John H. Bernard, Esq. on the 11th ultimo, Mr. Thomas Bolling, son of Thomas Bolling of Cobbs, in the 69th year of his age. To him, Nature, in her providence, denied the sense of hearing, and of consequence the gift of speech; and with them the thousand privileges and blessings that come of unrestrained social converse, and of the myriad sounds of created things. Yet thus disabled, her compensating gifts, seconded by favorable circumstances, conspired greatly to qualify these disadvantages and to render him a very remarkable man. Placed at an early age under the tuition of the celebrated Braidwead of Edinburg, his naturally fine understanding was rapidly developed. He read with pleasure, especially such books as treated of life or described natural scenery-composed and wrote in a peculiar, yet clear and graphic style, and achieved in attaining an artificial faculty of speech, almost equal to the natural (if I may so speak,) the most signal (single?) triumph over constitutional infirmity that probably has ever been accomplished by a Mute.-Uniting to the acqurements, great vivacity of disposition-polished and graceful manners-unequalled powers of imitation- and an almost intuitive preception of the meaning of others. he was the admiration and wonder of strangers- and the delight of an extensive connection and numerous friends. They will long deplore a loss that no time can supply. Alexandria Gazette (VA) February 24, 1836
